Students Recognized for Excellence

Toole, Gian P.Vergnetti and Robert Knight, all of Scranton, were among the 64 outstanding members of the University of Scranton’s undergraduate class of 2008 who were recognized for their academic excellence and/or service during the university’s recently held Class Night.
Aikido Classes Being Offered

Marywood University announced that Aikido classes will be offered to the community on its campus every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Robert J. Mellow Center for Athletics and Wellness.
Area Teachers Receive Mini Grants
Submitted by admin on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 15:21Mini-Grants totaling $8,057 were awarded to teachers for the 2008-09 academic year.
The grants were recently issued at a reception for teachers, principals, superintendents, and contributors.
Skills in Scranton, the business-education partnership of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, has awarded these grants annually since 1990.
Mini-Grants for Teachers has awarded more than $255,000 to 527 teachers in northeastern Pennsylvania that have affected thousands of students annually from pre-school through 12th grade.
Downtown Scranton 101 "Course" Given
Submitted by admin on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 15:16“Downtown Scranton: 101” was held this past week to introduce student “ambassadors” from Lackawanna County’s eight colleges and universities to the attractions and amenities in downtown Scranton.
Attendees received information about the city on a bus tour that featured prizes, t-shirts, goody bags and gift certificates from downtown businesses.
New Medical College Can Now Take Applications

This significant milestone was reached when the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) notified the college this past week that it has been granted preliminary accreditation.
“To be at this point, to be able to accept applications for TCMC’s charter class as the nation’s newest medical school, is a tremendous achievement. This timeline has been more aggressive than any other school in the country, and all of us at TCMC look forward to starting the process of interviewing potential students within weeks,” said Dr. Robert Wright, chairman of TCMC Board of Directors.
Dr. Townsend Named to Medical College Position
Submitted by admin on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 14:31The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) has announced that Janet Townsend, M.D., was appointed founding chairman of Family Medicine.
In this position, Dr. Townsend will oversee the Department’s education, research, clinical care and service programs. Additionally, she serves as a member of TCMC’s senior administrative team and will participate in the establishment of the department including the regional campuses, faculty recruitment and program/curriculum development.

Vatican Declines SDACT Petition Regarding Union Recognition

Martino’s decision that SDACT would not be recognized as a collective bargaining unit for teachers in Diocesan Catholic schools.
Healthy Cooking Classes Offered at Lackawanna
