POLICE CHIEF SHOULD RESIGN

by Ted Brunelle
“Scranton’s police chief should resign…” police union president Sgt. Bob Martin stated several times during a press conference held Aug. 18 at the Scranton Hilton.

Police Chief David Elliot was suspended for a week without pay Aug. 14 for allegedly making derogatory remarks on more than one occasion to two female officers. While formulating staffing assignments for a security detail pertaining to a surprise visit by presidential candidate Barak Obama, his request for two female officers to put in additional overtime was turned down.

According to Sgt. Martin, Chief Elliot responded by saying, “I thought you and Jane Doe were my two overtime whores… and now you want to be mommies and wives?” This was followed shortly after by, “Here come my two whores now…” as they later walked into his offices. Besides the two female officers and Chief Elliot, there were five witnesses to the event.

Les Neri, statewide president of the Fraternal Order of Police, backed up Sgt. Martin’s allegations, calling the chief’s behavior deplorable. They alluded to the fact that this was not an isolated incident but a continuous course of conduct by Chief Elliot.

Mayor Chris Doherty dismissed the severity of the situation, defending Chief Elliot through explaining that “it’s not what you say… it’s how it’s perceived…what they thought that matters.”

While the City of Scranton has merely suspended Chief Elliot for one week without pay and requested that he undergo sensitivity training, Sgt. Martin made it clear that he is looking for his stepping down as chief of police. “We are seeking a more just end to this situation... I would accept nothing less than (Chief Elliot’s) resignation,” said Sgt. Martin.

Grow up?

In this day and age remarks like these are unacceptable! At absolute best the police chiefs statements are irresponsible and show gross misconduct. I wonder what everyone would say if terms like that were used to describe their wives, daughters, or mothers. Think about it. Realize that if an employee had used those terms to describe, nevermind address, a female coworker or administration supervisor do you think the Mayor would be so quick to defend them...........the answer is obvious! Oh, and if they had said GFY we would not have to worry long about the outcome. Dick Cheney is WRONG for what he did! I would like to think a responsible person would agree.

Chief

This man, and I use that term with reservation, should just leave and save what little dignity he has left . This administration touts the most experienced and best will manage the department when Doherty took office . Nothing but, nothing could be farther from the truth. Dave Elliot, Tom Davis, and Lisa Moran are all symptoms of the disease this city has been infected with which is CHRIS DOHERTYS rein. Long term debt. a city budget which has gone from 56 million to over 86 million meanwhile while the workers have not received any increases( where is the money going?). But, these same workers must endure this type of caveman leadership. WAKE up Scranton rid yourselves of the disease of CHRIS DOHERTY.

Police Chief David Elliot

Grow up. Dick Chenay told members of congress to GFY and he's still here.
