Interdependence Day Kick-Off Slated
The Greater Scranton Interdependence Day Committee has reviewed plans for the 2008 Interdependence Day Celebration, to be kicked off on Friday, Sept. 5 with the Hexagon Project at MAC Gallery, 123 Wyoming Ave., Scranton, starting at 5 p.m.
Centerpiece for Interdependence Day will be "Choosing a Future of Promise," an event set for Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Federal Courthouse in Scranton.
Keynote speaker will be Shashi Tharoor, noted author of fiction and non-fiction works, and former Undersecretary General of the United Nations for Public Information.
Recipient of this year’s Interdependence Award will be Dr. Edward Boehm, president of Keystone College, LaPlume. Past winners of this prestigious award are Governor William W. Scranton, Judge Thomas Vanaskie, and Sister Margaret Gannon.
Interdependence Day was launched in Philadelphia on Sept. 12, 2003 as a post 9/11 symbol of regeneration and as a time to reflect on the tragedy of the incidents of terror, not only in the United States but also throughout the world, and to ask ourselves "What next?" It seemed critically important to acknowledge the inevitability and significance of interdependence in modern times and set out to build a global civic society constructively, civilly and culturally.
Events throughout the month of September will be held to celebrate Interdependence Day. For updated information about Interdependence Day and related events, interested persons may go to http://www.idayscranton.org.
