Tom Marino said he is hopeful that Tuesday’s vote to approve a two-week, short-term spending plan that saves taxpayers more than $4 billion will be a wake-up call to Senate Democrats.
The spending cuts in the bill are consistent with the continuing resolution passed by the House two weeks ago that cuts $60 billion in government spending. The short-term plan passed the House by a 335-91 vote and averts a potential government shutdown. The continuing resolution would fund the federal government through fiscal year 2011.
“We do not want to see a government shutdown,” Marino said. “We are pushing for the spending cuts so that we can save this nation and our struggling economy and create jobs for the American people.”
Marino, a freshman Republican from Lycoming Township, said it is up to the Senate Democrats to prove they are willing to work with Republicans to cut spending and create a favorable environment for job creation.
“We know why we were sent here and we know what must be done to repair the damage that decades of reckless spending have wrought on our country,” Marino said. “We will continue our fight for a more accountable and limited government. The biggest barrier to job creation and economic growth is our national debt which now exceeds $14 trillion.
“If the Senate Democrats do not want to see a government shutdown, they will have to become serious about spending cuts,” he said. “Our message to them is loud and clear: We are not going to back down.”

Performance Music at The University of Scranton will host a recital by renowned violinist Annamae Goldstein, accompanied by pianist Christopher Oldfather, on Sunday, March 13. The performance begins at 3 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

Goldstein earned her Master of Music at The Julliard School in 1988 and for the past 21 years has been a violinist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. She has also performed as part of the smaller group, the Metropolitan Opera Chamber Ensemble under the direction of James Levine. As a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Goldstein has had the opportunity to play on numerous recordings and television broadcasts with the company, including a Grammy-award-winning recording of Wagner’s “Die Walkure.” She has also performed on the group’s critically acclaimed recordings of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” and Beethoven’s “3rd Symphony.”

In addition to her work with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chamber Ensemble, Goldstein is also a founding member of and violinist for the IRIS String Quartet and a member of Musica Amici. The IRIS String Quartet has performed throughout the United States. Musica Amici has performed in New York and throughout the eastern United States.

A committed teacher and community activist, Goldstein has taught at the Trevor Day School as well as the French Woods summer music program. As a board member of the New York City philanthropic organization Pathways to Housing, she directs the organization’s music fund-raising program.

Accompanying Goldstein will be widely known pianist Christopher Oldfather. Since his recital debut in Carnegie Hall in New York in 1986, Oldfather has performed throughout the world as a freelance musician. He has appeared as a soloist with ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, the New World Symphony, and the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, Germany. His experiences have led him to perform on virtually every type of keyboard ever made, including the Chromelodeon, an experimental, color-coded reed organ developed by instrument creator Harry Partch. He is best known for his expertise on the harpsichord and as a leading advocate for the performance of 20th century music for more than 30 years. Oldfather has been a member of Boston’s Collage New Music since 1979, and New York’s Parnassus since 1997. In 1990, he was nominated for two Grammy Awards for his recording of Elliot Carter’s violin-piano duo with violinist Robert Mann.

7th Annual Festival of Unity Expands to Two-Day Celebration Featuring the Award-Winning CAPPA YG’s
A group of community members came together last month to help with plans for the 2011 Festival of Unity. In attendance were small business owners who have participated in past celebrations of the festival. The 7th Annual celebration expands to two days this year and will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10 at Nay Aug Park, Scranton PA. Each year this festival represents a beautiful array of cultural groups living in the Scranton area.
Our 2010 Festival was the best cultural event of the year representing native and merging cultural heritages that paint the unique collage of our community, inspiring us to believe we will do even better this year!
In past years the Festival of Unity has provided cultural expressions of African American, Arabian, Haitian, Indonesian, Jamaican, Latino, Native Americans, Nepali Bhutanese, and Russian heritages; with entertainment and presentations performed mostly by people right here in our community. Our goal for 2011 is to have more of the area’s traditional cultures such the Irish, Italian, Polish, Greek, etc. involved.
The Festival of Unity continues to grow in popularity because of our multi-diverse representation and family oriented atmosphere that has attracted thousands of visitors and vendors from as far as New Jersey, New York, and Ohio.
Lackawanna County is known and appreciated for the many outstanding cultural heritage celebrations that are unique to our area. The Festival of Unity is increasingly appreciated for its uniqueness in bringing these different cultures together under one sky for a day of fellowship; learning about and enjoying each other’s heritage.
Our mission is “To inspire social interaction of all cultures in Lackawanna County and make as our collective volition–the building of “One True Community.”
This year’s feature presentation is an outstanding, award-winning performing youth entourage known as the YG’s (Young Gentlemen) of the CAPPA Project in Williamsport, featuring over 30 school aged children who “Make the Grade.” CAPPA (Community Alliance for Progressive Positive Action) Youth intervention and Development Project is a Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Initiative created to offer positive alternatives to gang related and other detrimental activities that we hope to bring to our area to inspire the youth in our community.
In The Spirit of Unity
The Festival is about celebrating who the people are in our community. We continue each year with or without the needed sponsorships because the unique character of this celebration is that the community insists on self expression with cultural collaboration from various ethnic groups such as the Latinos and Nepal Bhutanese coming together in the spirit of unity; volunteering their skills and talents wherever needed to ensure a beautiful day of cultural camaraderie. In essence, this extraordinary event comes together by the people for the people.
“We are looking forward to a bigger, better and more diverse Unity Festival this year and for many more years to come” ~Blanca Rosenthal and Cesar Reyes-bringing the Latino flavor.
This festival goes beyond creating a target market for organizations and businesses seeking to reach a specific audience; our sponsors have been outstanding supporters of a true community and benefit tremendously and cost effectively by supporting a celebration of all cultures rather than running the risk of targeting a specific group and ignoring others. We are seeking sponsors with multicultural initiatives of inclusiveness.
“My vision has always been Unity and Excellence as the basis for One True Community. The Festival of Unity is the epitome of my vision!” says founder and organizer, Diane Boone.
It is our hope to have an exceptional celebration for the 2011 7th Annual Festival of Unity to honor the collage of wonderful cultural expressions within our community, therefore sponsorships and donations are needed and appreciated to ensure our continued success.
Cultural groups interested in performing or for sponsor and vendor information please visit our website at: http://unityfestival.wordpress.com or contact Diane Boone at 570-604-1108. For more information on the CAPPA Project visit them online at: http://cappaproject.org/

Scranton, Pennsylvania – On February 22, 2011, Robert M. D’ Alessandri, MD, president & dean and officials of The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC), welcomed 11th Congressional District Representative Lou Barletta (R), for a briefing and tour of TCMC’s Medical Sciences Building.
Among topics discussed were the relatively high rates of some cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other age-related conditions in Northeastern Pennsylvania that will benefit from active research programs at TCMC. Supported by numerous research grants from federal agencies and foundations, TCMC’s researchers and faculty focus their research projects on diseases and conditions that are relevant to our patient populations and will provide additional training opportunities for medical students, residents and fellows in the 36 laboratories dedicated to medical research in the TCMC Medical Sciences Building.

Located on Pine Street in Scranton, the four-story, 185,000 sq. ft. project is expected to be complete in April 2011. TCMC’s Medical Sciences Building s will open its doors to incoming students in the medical degree and masters of biomedical sciences degree programs in August 2011. Officials of TCMC welcomed its charter class in August 2009 and now in its second year of operation, the medical college has attracted thousands of applicants to fill 65 positions for its first and second year.
