Congressman Barletta Tours TCMC Medical College
Scranton, Pennsylvania – On February 22, 2011, Robert M. D’ Alessandri, MD, president & dean and officials of The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC), welcomed 11th Congressional District Representative Lou Barletta (R), for a briefing and tour of TCMC’s Medical Sciences Building.
Among topics discussed were the relatively high rates of some cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other age-related conditions in Northeastern Pennsylvania that will benefit from active research programs at TCMC. Supported by numerous research grants from federal agencies and foundations, TCMC’s researchers and faculty focus their research projects on diseases and conditions that are relevant to our patient populations and will provide additional training opportunities for medical students, residents and fellows in the 36 laboratories dedicated to medical research in the TCMC Medical Sciences Building.
Located on Pine Street in Scranton, the four-story, 185,000 sq. ft. project is expected to be complete in April 2011. TCMC’s Medical Sciences Building s will open its doors to incoming students in the medical degree and masters of biomedical sciences degree programs in August 2011. Officials of TCMC welcomed its charter class in August 2009 and now in its second year of operation, the medical college has attracted thousands of applicants to fill 65 positions for its first and second year.
